Planned program of clinical practice in education under the direction and supervision of a university supervisor and a selected practitioner. Recommendation of program area and successful completion of Professional Studies required.
The Student Teaching experience consists of a full-time 10-week internship under under the tutelage of a mentor teacher in a public school setting and a university supervisor.
In the Technology Education Program at Virginia Tech, we believe that teaching is an essential ingredient in the preparation for a career in education. It is desirable and important to read about teaching, listen to lectures about teaching, and observe others who are teaching. But, these are basically passive behaviors. Teaching involves skills and strategies that may best be learned and improved through experience. Under the guidance of a mentor teacher, teacher candidates (student teaching interns) can gain valuable clinical experience in classroom situations. Under the proper conditions, these experiences can have a positive and long-lasting influence on the student teaching interns' realization of their full potential as teachers.
In your years of Technology Education preparation thus far, you have been exposed to a broad cultural experience. You have become familiar with certain aspects of human development and the science and art of teaching. Also, you have developed certain technical knowledge and skills. As a student teaching intern, you will have the opportunity to put these into practice. The aim of this experience is to start you on the road to becoming a skillful and creative teacher.
