Virginia Tech, which ranks among the top 50 research universities in the US, enrolls approximately 6,500 graduate and 20,500 undergraduate students. This exceptionally beautiful campus is situated in the town of Blacksburg, Virginia on a 2,000 foot plateau between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains in southwest Virginia. Technology Education Program


The Technology Education Program was founded at Virginia Tech in 1946. During its early years, the program concentrated on high quality undergraduate instruction. In 1972, the graduate program was organized, and has long been recognized as one of the leading graduate programs in Technology Education.

Technology Education masters and doctoral graduates are highly sought for leadership roles in secondary education, higher education, administration, and the private sector. The graduate program is designed to help students advance their leadership abilities with emphasis on research, scholarship, and analytical skills. Over the years, the faculty has been widely recognized for outstanding leadership, scholarship, and research activity.

Masters Degree (MA)


The Master of Arts degree is designed for technology teachers and others seeking to expand their knowledge of the field and develop their academic skills and credentials. Graduates of Engineering, Architecture, and Design programs may be admitted to the Technology Education Masters / Licensure Program (TEMLP) described below, which prepares them for teaching opportunities that exist almost everywhere. Masters degree students may select either a thesis or non-thesis option.

Masters/Licensure Program (TEMLP)


The Technology Education Masters/Licensure Program (TEMLP) is open (only) to those holding a bachelors degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Design. The TEMLP may be completed in 15 months (Summer/Fall/Spring/Summer), and results in both a Masters Degree and all of the coursework required to teach Technology Education in grades 6-12..

Education Specialist (EdS)


The EdS degree is awarded upon successful completion of an approved Program of Study that includes 30 or more post masters hours in the approved Program of Study, a planned project and a Comprehensive Examination.

Doctor of Education (EdD)


The EdD degree is oriented toward educational practice. The Program of Study is tailored to each individual student based upon prior academic and professional experience, interests, and career objectives. At least 60 hours beyond the master’s degree are required along with a residency of two consecutive summers or semesters and the completion of at least 24 semester hours. Minimum degree requirements include:

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)


The PhD degree is oriented toward research. The Program of Study is tailored to each individual student based upon prior academic and professional experience, interests, and career objectives. At least 66 semester hours beyond the masters degree are required along with residency of two, normally continuous, academic years. The program of study includes the following minimum requirements:

  • Concentration (30 hrs. minimum, including at least 21 hrs. in VTE)
  • Professional Studies Core (9 hrs. minimum)
  • Cognate (6 hrs. minimum)
  • Research/Evaluation Studies (15 hrs. minimum)
  • Dissertation (30 - 40 hrs. minimum)

The components of the Ph.D. in C & I are:

  • Concentration (3 hrs. minimum)
  • General Foundations (3 hrs. minimum)
  • Cognate (3 hrs. minimum)
  • Research/Evaluation Studies (12 hrs. minimum)
  • Dissertation (30 hrs. minimum)

At least 24 graduate level semester credit hours, including no less than 15 hours of course work (not research 7994), must be completed during 2 consecutive semesters while in residence at the Virginia Tech Blacksburg Campus (i.e. Fall/Spring, Spring/Summer, Summer/Fall or Spring/Fall). Of the 15 hours of course work, a maximum of 6 hours may be taken in any combination of internship, field study, or independent study. With the help of faculty advisors, post master's develop their own individualized plan of study based on prior academic and professional experience, interests, and career objectives.

Applicants to the Doctoral Degree should have teaching experience, hold a master's degree from an accredited college or university with a grade point average of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) or better, and provide three letters of recommendation. In addition, they are required to submit a writing sample and attend an interview with the Technology Education Faculty.

Applications and Admissions


Graduate applications are submitted electronically from http://www.grads.vt.edu/prospective.htm. (Regular admission to the Masters program requires a GPA >3.0 in the final 60 hours of undergraduate study. Other masters admission options are described in the Graduate Catalog. Doctoral applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation, a writing sample, and GRE scores and must participate in an interview with the faculty.


Financial Support


Graduate teaching/research assistantships are available in Technology Education for qualified full-time students on a competitive basis.
