Technological literacy for all. Content organizers: Communication, Production, Energy / Transportation systems / technologies. Primary instructional methodology: “technological problem-solving” (engineering design). TE also known as “Design and Technology.”

VT TE Program’s Purpose
Prepare K-PhD Technology educators, leaders, and future professoriate.

Relevant Historical Chronology
1946: TE Program founded (College of A&S)
1973: Masters and doctoral programs begun
1991: Utah State study ranked VT #1TE PhD in US
1996: Outstanding TE Program (national award)
Spring 2003: VT phases out all UG teacher education
Fall 2004: Bridges for Engineering/Education Project (NSF funded, TE and Engineering Co-PIs)
2004: TE begins phase-out of UG, increases graduate emphasis; 10 active Masters & 12 active PhD students
Summer 2004: New TE Masters/Licensure Program

Critical Teaching Shortage Area
TE formally designated a “Critical Teaching Shortage Area” in VA since 1995, and in nearly all other states. Localities have paid “signing bonuses” of up to $50,000 (Boston) or up to $20,000 loan payoffs (FL).
